Heard From the Hill

NPMA staff have continued meeting with key stakeholders on Capitol Hill, including staff from both the House and Senate Agriculture committees. This past week, we met with minority staff from the Senate Agriculture committee to thank them for their involvement with planning McCauley Services’ and NPMA’s event for Sen. John Boozman. We ended the week by meeting with the office of Troy Balderston (OH-12), who sits on the House Agriculture committee and cosponsored HR 7226 (Rep. Rodney Davis’ standalone pesticide preemption bill). During both of these meetings, NPMA provided staff with background on our pesticide preemption efforts to-date and socialized the importance of including state-level pesticide preemption in the 2023 Farm Bill.

Engagement around the topic of rodents up 73%

To keep a pulse on consumer pest concerns, the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), the consumer marketing arm of NPMA, uses Artificial Intelligence to accurately assess public opinion on a given topic by generating randomized, controlled samples of the population through online media and using text analytics.

In its most recent PPMA Update, a monthly newsletter shared with investors, they reported their August results. According to PPMA’s AI research, bed bugs and rodents saw the highest increase in engagement out of any other core pest at 187% and 73%, respectively. There was also a strong increase in rodent sightings in the bathroom and kitchen at 191% and 57%, respectively. With these figures, it is no surprise that in the context of health and home concerns, the U.S. population saw an increase in engagement on rodents (238%), bed bugs (147%) and mice (48%) from the previous month.

Notably, engagement around the topic of opossums saw a staggering increase at 686%. There was also a stark increase in engagement on the topic of raccoons in California at 8,588%, mice in Pennsylvania at 6,923% and bats in Arizona at 1,100%.
