Farm Bill Discussions Continue; Extension Seems Increasingly Likely

With Congress in session only a few more weeks, the possibility of a Farm Bill passing prior to midterm elections is increasingly unlikely. Nevertheless, NPMA continues to keep the pressure on members of Congress to not only pass the bill but to include NPMA priorities in the final version. NPMA has reached out to the office of the so called “Big 4”; these four members are the Chair and ranking member on the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, and they are currently working out an agreement on what will be included in the Farm Bill, as there are many differences between the House and Senate version. Senator Pat Robert (R-KS), Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Representative Collin Peterson (D-MN-7) and Representative Michael Conaway (R-TX-11) all received a letter from NPMA clarifying the pesticide pre-emption issue, as a counter to incorrect press reports. NPMA also sent this letter and one from Minnesota NPMA members to those in the Minnesota delegation involved in farm bill negotiations.
