Structural Fumigation Stewardship Meeting with U.S. EPA and Fumigant Registrants

NPMA and the sulfuryl fluoride registrants met last week with EPA staff to discuss registrant stewardship opportunities.  Last year, the NPMA Fumigation Committee identified a set of critical elements for registrant stewardship and training to EPA to help inform their response to the 2016 Office of Inspector General (OIG) report entitled, “Additional Measures Can Be Taken to Prevent Deaths and Serious Injuries From Residential Fumigations.”  EPA responded to NPMA’s initial suggestions with comments and questions.  At that time, NPMA decided that registrants should be included in discussions with industry and EPA regarding potential changes to their stewardship programs, resulting in the meeting held this week.  NPMA and the registrants are continuing to work together to settle on a stewardship training model that makes good sense, is not duplicative, and achieves the goal of fumigant stewardship.  NPMA will continue to work closely with EPA and registrants throughout the registration review process which is expected to wrap up in 2019 or 2020.
