EPA Office of Inspector General Releases Report on Herbicide Resistance and Synergistic Effects of Co-Formulated Products

In a report titled EPA Can Strengthen Its Oversight of Herbicide Resistance With Better Management Controls, EPA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) released recommendations this week targeting how the Office of Pesticide Programs’ (OPP) handles herbicide resistance issues.  In the report, OIG recommended that OPP "Determine whether synergistic effects data should be required for the pesticide registration process, and document the results of that determination". This recommendation is the result of concerns from anti-pesticide advocacy groups that co-formulated products, including insecticides approved for structural pest control, uses might pose greater risks to humans or the environment when co-formulated.  Prior the release of this report, however, OPP had developed an interim strategy for monitoring patented claims regarding synergistic effects on efficacy and is determining how this information might influence risk evaluation in the future.  OPP will determine how this information might influence future evaluations before June 2019.
