Perdue & Acosta Clear Procedural Hurdles in the Senate; Confirmation Vote Coming Soon

Last week, two Cabinet nominees who NPMA has been monitoring closely advanced towards confirmation. The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee voted in favor to report the nomination of Governor Sonny Perdue to the full Senate for Confirmation. Likewise, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 12-11 along party lines to send Labor secretary nominee Alexander Acosta to the floor for final approval.

Both Secretaries, when confirmed, will play an important role in shaping policy. We anticipate Perdue to play a more active role in working with the EPA on the registration and review of pesticides and we anticipate Acosta, as reported last week, to play an prominent role in drafting a new overtime regulation that raises the overtime threshold to approximately $33,000 annually, as opposed to the $47,000 proposed under former Secretary of Labor Tom Perez.

Both nominees will most likely be confirmed in late April due to the Senate dedicating most of next week to debate on Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, followed by a two-week recess.
