In the wake of decisions by national brands like Walmart and Kroger to pull ammo and ban the open carry of guns from their stores, local firearms dealers and experts aren’t expecting major changes for the gun owners of Southeast Texas.

A pair of suspects arrested last week in connection with two separate break-ins at local pawn shops appeared before a judge Wednesday for a probable cause hearing. Jonesboro police arrested Kelvin Morrow and Emanuel Cotton, both 19, in connection with the case.

An Agassiz pawn shop charged 25% interest a month, similar to other shops in the region. The store has been ordered to pay more than $3,000 to the former owner of a vintage accordion, after a judge found the pawn shop’s interest rates were “criminal.”

Rate caps will simply mean that the cost of lending money goes up — and as a result, lenders will try to reduce their costs. They will do this by only lending to people who are least likely to default.
