Pawn shop owners are warning of a growing scam in Southwest Florida. The owner of Cape Jewelry and Pawn said scammers are coming to his store with phones to pawn or sell. They claim it’s theirs but once they get the money, they call their provider and claim it’s been lost or stolen.

Local pawn shop owner Ken Kocinski is making a play to purchase Mounds Mall, which is scheduled to close after March 31. Kocinski said this week that he offered $200,000 for the mall building and land, not including the parking lots. He said his goal was to keep the current tenants housed at the mall and to keep the mall open.

One of the suspects in the San Bernardino pawn shop homicide in January remains in custody in Las Vegas, and a third suspect — who is suspected of helping after the fact — has been charged in the case. San Bernardino County prosecutors have charged Darcell Harris, Brandon Hall and Mallory Upshur in connection with the Jan. 10 botched robbery and shootout at the pawn shop, at 2601 Highland Avenue. Jason Cullen, 32, of Highland, was shot and later died. Two other people were wounded.

Scammers appear to have made off with more than $2 million in cryptocurrency after carrying out an apparent fake initial coin offering (ICO), and the individuals linked to the incident may be connected to another recent theft.

Express Pawn doesn’t sell merchandise just to customers who walk in the door. Since October, the Grand Island, Neb., store has also been selling items online. Using three different websites, the pawn shop sells DVDs, tools, toys and other products, mostly to people who live in the area. Other popular items sold online are video games and consoles, shoes and sports jerseys.
