The American Welding Society (AWS) has announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Carey Chen as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective Monday, January 20, 2025. Mr. Chen succeeds Robert Roth, who has served as Interim Executive Director and CEO.

Mr. Chen brings extensive leadership experience to AWS, and has been an active volunteer with AWS and the AWS Foundation since 2007.
Commenting on his new role, Mr. Chen said, "After nearly two decades of volunteer leadership at AWS, I am honored to take on this new responsibility as CEO. I look forward to working closely with our talented staff, dedicated board of directors, volunteers, and members to advance AWS’s mission and vision, driving innovation and growth for the welding community.”

On Jan. 10, the Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in southern California affected by wildfires and straight-line winds that began on Jan. 7, 2025. These taxpayers now have until Oct. 15, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments.
The IRS is offering relief to any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Currently, individuals and households that reside or have a business in Los Angeles County qualify for tax relief.
The same relief will be available to any other counties added later to the disaster area. The current list of eligible localities is always available on the Tax relief in disaster situations page on IRS.gov.
