The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced on March 21, 2020 that the federal tax filing deadline will be extended to July 15, 2020. Taxpayers do not need to file additional forms, or contact the IRS, in order to qualify for the extension.
According to the announcement on IRS.gov, the deferment applies to all taxpayers, including: individuals, corporations, non-corporate tax filers, estates and trusts, and anyone who pays a self-employment tax. If individuals require additional time to file their taxes past the July 15 deadline, they can request this extension by filing form 4868. Business can also request an extension past the July 15 deadline by filing form 7004. Both forms can be submtited through a tax professional, with tax software, or by using the IRS's Free File option at IRS.gov.
Although the deadline has been extended to July 15, the IRS encourages taxpayers to file as soon as they are able, as most tax refunds are still being issued within 3 weeks. Additionally, many states are also following the new July 15 tax extension deadline, although some have rules and guidelines that are different. Find your state's deadline here.
