Wrought Iron Railing by Iron Masters, Inc. |
Gold: Iron Masters, Inc.
Title of Entry: Wrought Iron Railing Designed by: Fabricator Material: Mild steel Finish: Painted Total Labor Hours:1,600
This award-winning project encompasses the sweeping main staircase and second-floor railing: a gracefully curving flight from the first to the second floor, a short curved panel at the first-floor landing, and another curved run descending to the lower level. While most of the second-floor guard is straight, the balcony overlooking the music room carries the curvature theme. The railing’s form – evoking a simple bouquet of freshly picked flowers – flows organically without posts along the stair, then transitions into post-supported panels on level runs. Every element was forged, hammered, and welded by hand, installed mechanically on site, and finally painted with selective golden highlights to accentuate its three-dimensional character. When late-stage wood curbing on the second floor weakened the anchorage, the team resolved the challenge by adding vertical decorative brackets tied into the fascia board, preserving both structural integrity and aesthetic intent.

ENRMidwest On July 1, crews placed four pioneering W14 × 1000 rolled-steel columns – each weighing 1,000 lb per ft– into the bracing core of Henry Ford Health’s new 20-story, 1.2-million-sq-ft hospital tower in Detroit, centerpiece of the $2.2-billion “Destination: Grand” expansion. Rolled exclusively by ArcelorMittal, these jumbo shapes provide the mass and stiffness to handle heavy medical equipment plus wind and seismic demands, while avoiding the extra fabrication, cost and embodied carbon of built-up welded columns. The project also debuts high-strength A913 Grade 80 sections in a healthcare setting, shaving overall steel tonnage. Together, these first-of-their-kind components streamline construction and set a new benchmark for hospital high-rise design.

ConstructionDive Construction job openings rose slightly in May to 245,000, up just 3,000 from April, according to the latest federal data. While the increase is modest, the number of openings remains significantly lower –down 35% – compared to May 2024, reflecting a cooling job market. Despite fewer hires, layoffs remain historically low, suggesting contractors are holding onto workers amid labor shortages and project uncertainty. Analysts note a cautious industry stance, with firms scaling back growth plans but avoiding widespread job cuts. Ongoing immigration enforcement may further affect workforce dynamics, though the full impact remains to be seen.
