Gold: Magnum Companies

Title of Entry: Heroes Park

Materials: Stainless steel filigree attached to a panelized wall system; laser-cut stainless steel plate with standoffs to float off the Corten steel wall panels

Total Labor Hours: 348

Magnum Companies designed this installation for the entry of a new public library. The project was challenging from the start - the exterior wall cladding (by another subcontractor) would not support the filagree. In an effort to keep a consistent appearance on the wall panels, they were unwilling to use a heavier gauge at the entryway, so Magnum Companies had to adjust by modifying the filagree mounting design, which led to a hefty number of standoffs.

Magnum Companies attached approximately 450 stainless steel studs to the filagree using a laser cut template. Then, with the same template, they drilled the existing Corten steel panels as they set in place, removed the panels and assembled the filagree to the panels with corten steel tube spacers. Lastly, they reinstalled the panels. This method created shadow lines, which makes the stainless steel filigree appear to be floating.

The sketch provided by the designer was the first step in a collaborative creation process that included the GC, architect, and wall panel subcontractor, which ultimately yielded a feasible (and beautifully unique) overall design.
