Gold: The Heirloom Companies

Title of Entry: Copper Kitchen Island Light

Finish Type: Five-step finishing process

Total Labor Hours: 180

Materials: Copper and bronze

After The Heirloom Companies completed several other projects for this residence (including stairs, rails and entry gates), they were given free rein in the design and creation of this one-of-a-kind kitchen island light. Each of the four lights is made of copper, held together by a steel frame. The corners of the lights were all achieved by attaching a large copper wire where the copper corners meet, and attaching a smaller copper wire on each side. Then, a bronze rod was melted to infill between. The finished product is a beautifully textured contrast to the smoothness of the copper.

This same process was used on the bottom of the lights, but rather than using a copper wire, half-inch copper pipe was used. The finish was a five-step process, and the beauty of the lights is a testament to the patience, attention to detail, and fine craftsmanship employed from beginning to end.
