TRENDS IN TECHNOLOGY

One of the major areas of focus in the evolution of innovative project delivery methods like design-build and integrated project delivery (IPD) is the elimination or mitigation of change orders and their disruptive effects on projects. However, unforeseen conditions, changing owner needs, and other uncontrollable factors mean that change orders will never be entirely eliminated. The reality is that more effective ways of managing change on projects are needed. As the construction industry explores new ways of leveraging data and analytics, the question we ought to be asking is "In what ways can data help us with change order management?"

In mid August, Ford chief executive, Mark Fields, announced plans to have fully self-driving cars available for sale by 2021. The cars will be unrolled first as a ride sharing mechanism before they will be made available to the general public a few years later. Fields commented about Ford’s future strategy to the LA Times, "The next decade will be defined by the automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having a significant impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago."
