HP Printers Designed for Construction

Despite the buzz about digital, paper-free workplaces, contractors still rely on paper drawings, which they can review together and mark up as necessary. HP has engineered its new DesignJet technical printers to withstand tough environments, while making large-format printing faster and easier.

"Many of the features of this printer are helpful," says Maurice Clarke, virtual design and construction manager with Hensel Phelps in Orlando, Florida, a member of multiple AGC chapters, describing the HP DesignJet T830 Multifunction Printer (MFP). "Hard copy drawings give a comfort level. We are still using iPads, but it’s seldom you see foremen and subcontractors using them. They roll out a hard copy set of drawings and mark them up."

With that in mind, HP engineered technical printers for the construction industry that print, scan and copy in tough environments.

"Paper is an important part of the process," adds Ed McCarthy, marketing manager for HP’s large format suite of products. "On a tablet or phone, someone may not be able to read the changes in a large enough format to understand the changes. And with the cost of construction, you want to make sure you are aligned with the architects before you build it."

The printers come with an optional rugged case, large wheels and a dust cover. The HP DesignJet T830 MFP and HP DesignJet T730 Printer print off a roll or paper tray. The multifunction printer can print an A1/D-size print in 25 seconds, and if desired, it can print at half scale to save paper and time.

The HP DesignJet T830 MFP’s scanner can scan a 3-ft by 25-ft document. Both printers feature an adjustable 4.3-inch touch screen that works like a smartphone.

The printers create their own WiFi network to facilitate collaboration. Users can print from Android and Apple mobile devices with the HP Mobile Printing app. HP DesignJet T830 MFP users can scan and send documents by email or to a cloud-based repository.

"You are keeping things mobile, and those in the field, in the field," Clarke says, explaining that the printer communicates with others using a streamlined process. Crucial changes can be made in seconds and distributed on paper or online to all the necessary individuals. He explained that on a recent project, after all of the on-site parties signed off on a coordination drawing, he scanned it with the signatures and shared it instantly with the design team.

Clarke also appreciates that the HP DesignJet T830 MFP footprint is smaller than other large-scale printers, and it is easy to move around the work trailer. The printer helps Hensel Phelps build more efficiently and avoid cost overruns, Clarke said, indicating the printer has paid for itself in making sure people have the right information at the right time.
