Building a Mobile Device Program: Part Two

Last month, we included an article on how to start a mobile device program. This is the second in the series.

One of the main items to determine in the creation of your program is whether your company will provide employees with mobile devices or allow them to use their own (bring your own device or BYOD). Both scenarios have advantages and disadvantages to consider.

Company Provided
Under this scenario the company provides the employee with a mobile device and access to the required apps.

Advantages:
1. There is only one type of device to maintain; this makes it easier to manage issues.
2. Training employees on one platform takes less time than on multiple ones.
3. Having one device makes it easier to replace lost cords and accessories.

Disadvantages:
1. The company pays for lost and replacement devices.
2. The company pays for all data and cell usage; this can be abused by an employee.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Under this scenario companies allow employees to use their personal devices for company work. The company determines what apps shall be used to accomplish workflows. For example, in order to collect progress photos from projects the company may use an app such as FotoIn Mobile. The company would provide the app subscription for the employee to use on their device.

Advantages:
1. The company does not pay for devices and replacement devices.
2. Employees are more productive with a device they choose and like for use.
3. Employees are more likely to work from home with a personal device.

Disadvantages:
1. Required apps must work on different platforms.
2. Determination of compensation for using personal device.
