Who Uses Asset Tracking Devices?

Q: I am wondering if anyone is currently using an asset tracking device(s) for their equipment and/or material. I am interested in asset trackers that have a self contained battery unit and report regularly. Additionally if they have the capability of setting up geofencing and notifications if they are removed from that fence. We currently have vehicle GPS tracking that works great, but are now looking for smaller units to track equipment and/or materials. Thanks in advance!

A: I've tested the Telenav asset tracking product through Verizon Wireless. I was pleased with the solution overall; easy setup, nice dashboard view, small units with good battery life and cost.

Q: I am curious how many of you relate CIM with virtual design and construction (VDC) in the Civil / Heavy Construction sector of the industry. AGC Highway Division started using it, supposedly interchangeably, with BIM.

A: I have seen the term used quite a bit in the industry press and believe it was highlighted in ENR a few months ago – might have been elsewhere – but it is not "original" w/ AGC.

A: Civil Infrastructure Modeling.

A: Yes that use makes sense.  However notes I read from AGC indicated our chapter would be helping host a pilot CIM - Civil Integrated Management.  There was enough confusion selling BIM.  In my opinion AGC should be promoting and educating as strongly for CIM - Civil Infrastructure Modeling as it did for BIM.  This is a task the ITFORUM could take on in partnership with Highway AND Utility Divisions.  There's as much potential with CIM...  Other comments?  Thx for the feedback Dean and Dave... This is a hot topic for me.

A: It is on President Joe’s agenda – you guys need to talk to the leadership of your division and VP Al to make sure that your voice (and concerns) are heard.
