Daily Recap
Leading the Industry Forward
Up and at it early were conference attendees who poured into the Empire Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency for AGC’s Opening General Session. This is AGC’s opportunity to highlight its accomplishments during the past year and lay out its plan for the future. And, while it’s difficult to summarize all the achievements in a two-hour window, AGC’s leadership - outgoing president Art Daniel, incoming president Eddie Stewart and CEO Steve Sandherr – touched on some of the impressive highlights: 1) AGC Charities - providing a combined $300,000 to victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Maria; 2) this year’s Autodesk Operation Opening Doors project - helping veterans with invisible wounds, 3) the newly developed innovation awards – recognizing individuals who are pioneering solutions to the industry’s challenges; 4) key strides made in our nation’s capital – impacting tax reform and infrastructure investment, and 5) AGC’s centennial celebration.

Overall, an impressive year. But AGC won't stop there. As Sandherr noted at the end of his address, "AGC is standing on a very strong foundation and will continue to lead the industry moving forward."

Eyes Wide Open
Yesterday’s keynote speaker at the Opening General Session was Isaac Lidsky, former child actor and author of the book Eyes Wide Open. With candor and humor, he inspired and entertained the audience with his personal story – one of triumph over fear. At the age of 13, Lidsky learned he had a disorder that eventually would cause him to lose his sight. Initially trapped in fear’s web – which prevented him from seeing life any other way – Lidsky convinced himself that he would lead a less than fulfilling life because of his blindness. Eventually he learned, however, that by breaking down his situation into problems he could address individually, he was able to conquer the fear, silence the negative voices and make progress one step at a time. As he said, "You can’t get from A to Z without getting from A to B." Lidsky is married, the father of four, a co-owner of a successful construction business and a TED Talk author who learned through blindness how to live his life with eyes wide open.
