DENVER DELIVERABLES

The term deliverables is a common industry buzzword: a company’s follow-through – or delivery – on a commitment to a client, customer or employee. AGC of America is an organization which understands the value of deliverables. It promised an event loaded with productive networking opportunities, top-notch education sessions, motivating keynote speakers and cutting-edge solutions. And at its 100th Annual Convention in Denver, April 1-4, 2019, it delivered on those commitments.

From early morning to late afternoon, construction professionals roamed the Denver Convention Center, going from inspiring keynote sessions to impressive award ceremonies and ending each day with a Happy Hour in the Equipment, Technology & Construction Solutions Expo, where the real work (read: networking) began.

Every year, the association honors its members’ outstanding accomplishments during several award ceremonies. The Denver event was no different. At its second annual Diversity & Inclusion Awards on Tuesday, April 2, sponsored by Willis Towers Watson, the association bestowed excellence awards to the following organizations: Austin Commercial (large contractor category), Shoemaker Construction (mid-sized contractor category), Central Builders (small contractor category) and United Rentals (service or supply firm). The Diversity and Inclusion Chapter Award went to AGC of Missouri, and Ujamaa Construction was named the Diverse Business of the Year.

Also on Tuesday, AGC bestowed 12 merit awards and 26 Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards to projects that have excelled in state-of-the-art achievement, excellence in project management, innovation and superior client service. The National Veterans Memorial and Museum, by contractor Turner Construction Company, was deemed the most impressive construction project of 2018 and named the 2019 Construction Risk Partners Build America Grand Award winner.

AGC of America and Willis Towers Watson honored 57 construction firms at the Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) luncheon — an event where camaraderie wins over competition and people over projects. Keeping the spotlight on construction workers coming home safely every night is of utmost importance, and that’s what the CSEA program does. At the awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 3, 17 firms received third-place honors, 20 secured second-place and another 20 were named first-place winners. From the last group, the "best of the best" or grand award winner was selected. Congratulations to the 2019 recipient, Encore Electric, Inc.

Concluding the awards programs was the student chapter awards at the Closing General Session. Roger Williams University, Oregon State University and Pittsburg State University were recognized as the nation’s most outstanding student construction chapters of 2018, honored in three categories: Emerging Student Chapter Award, Community Service Award and Construction Management Skills Award.

The 2019 Annual Convention officially concluded the commemoration of AGC of America’s 100th anniversary. As it moves into its second century, it does so with a new logo and tagline: “The Construction Association,” defining it as the association to which all industry professionals, legislators and media will turn for guidance. Where there are questions, AGC will have answers. Where there are problems, AGC will have solutions. In other words … deliverables.
