Fifty-four percent of highway contractors reported that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by AGC of America. In response, association officials have launched a new mobile advertising campaign urging drivers who routinely pass through certain work zones to slow down and be alert.

In conjunction with AGC’s 2018 workforce development campaign, we are currently seeking success stories and best practices in the areas of construction workforce development, industry image enhancement and industry recruiting. Our goal is to gather and share these success stories with member firms and AGC chapter staff in the hopes of increasing knowledge sharing and program collaboration, communicating lessons learned, and sparking innovative workforce solutions. Submitted success stories will have the opportunity to be featured in AGC’s Workforce Development Plan and a number of other AGC publications, webinars and the AGC website.

Do you have a successful workforce program to share? If so, please submit your programs through ProposalSpace. For questions, please contact Carly Trout at carly.trout@agc.org. Submit your program today and help AGC build the industry’s workforce!

Forty-two states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between May 2017 and May 2018, while 28 states added construction jobs between April and May, according to an analysis by AGC of America of Labor Department data released recently. Association officials warned that soaring construction costs, aggravated by new tariffs on steel and aluminum, could trigger project cancellations and job losses. "It is heartening to see such widespread construction job gains," said chief economist Ken Simonson. "However, unexpected, steep cost increases for many materials may force some contractors to lay off workers, while passing on price hikes will likely cause public agencies and private owners to delay or cancel projects."

AGC has prepared a drone use survey to determine the state of the art in drone use on highway, bridge, heavy and civil projects. AGC's Highway and Transportation Division has created a task force to address the use of Unmanned Arial Systems - aka drones - in civil construction operations. The task force is looking at issues such as: how contractors are using drones in day-to-day operations, what impediments to their use exist, what are best practice recommendations, what technical issues need to be addressed, how can AGC work with FHWA and state DOTs in addressing these concerns. Three members of the task force participated in a national roundtable conference with FHWA, AASHTO, state DOTs and industry representatives in February to discuss how the groups can work together to ensure that no unnecessary impediments are preventing the use of this technology in construction operations from developing. This survey will help guide the task force's efforts. Please take the time to have the person in your company who is the expert on drone use complete the survey.

Business Tips
In many industries, companies are struggling to recruit good people and fighting even harder to retain them. What’s harder still is getting good people in, helping them grow to be even better employees, and then being the type of company that high-performing employees choose to stay at instead of going elsewhere.
