Fifty-one construction professionals received a new national accreditation in the use of Lean Construction, a holistic practice aimed at minimizing costs and maximizing efficiency on construction projects. The professional designation offered by AGC of America, is a new assessment-based credential to recognize construction professionals on their ability to use the process. "This new program is the foundation for contractors to focus on continuous improvement to eliminate waste and deliver predictable project outcomes, said Victor Sanvido, senior vice president of Southland Industries. "Earning this credential symbolizes a crucial first step to becoming a Lean Champion in the industry." Association officials noted that Lean theory, principles and techniques provide the foundation for a more collaborative form of project management that seeks to minimize costs and maximize efficiency on construction projects. They added that while firms have been embracing Lean construction for some time now, the association’s new credentialing program is the first time professionals can demonstrate mastery of the hyper-efficient construction approach.

Construction firms added 46,000 workers in November for the biggest monthly gain in employment for the sector since January 2014, as the industry’s unemployment rate declined to 6.2 percent. AGC of America officials noted that the robust job gains come as demand for construction continues to expand and new federal transportation legislation will further boost employment in the sector.

Employee retention continues to be a concern for many industries. Only 29 percent of American employees say they feel valued by their companies, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This dissatisfaction can lead to employee turnover, which costs American businesses $11 billion every year. If you’re seeking high-level talent, turnover can cause delays and create an unstable work environment in addition to costing your business. But by taking positive, thoughtful steps, you can prevent employee turnover.

A special community partnership between College Mentors for Kids and F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company, an Indiana Construction Association member, is exposing kids to careers in construction. Students from the University of Indianapolis chapter of College Mentors for Kids paired up with Wilhelm Construction Company to teach kids about estimating, planning, safety and other topics of construction. Fifty-five second-through-sixth graders from Paul I. Miller School #114 and their UIndy student mentors gathered in the Schwitzer Student Center to learn what it takes to construct a building from beginning to end. To let the kids try out the processes, four Wilhelm Construction employee volunteers led the kids and mentors in making their own birdhouses. The activity capped off with the kids exploring a concrete pump truck and holding a Q & A with the pump truck operator.
