The May/June issue of Constructor magazine is now available online and in print. In it, we recap AGC’s 100th Annual Convention in Denver, celebrate the milestone marker the CM-Lean Education Program has reached, deal with drone data, and much more.

 

 

AGC is encouraging all AGC members and chapters to urge their representatives, senators and President Trump to fund a robust infrastructure bill, including fixing the Highway Trust Fund by increasing the federal gas tax. President Trump and congressional Democratic leaders recently agreed in principle on a $2 trillion price tag for a broad infrastructure package. However, they fell short of identifying how to pay such a bill. Both sides agreed, nonetheless, to meet again to have a more specific conversation on how to pay for these new infrastructure investments. Help us keep the pressure on Congress and the president by urging them to act NOW on an infrastructure bill.

Construction employment increased by 33,000 jobs in April and by 256,000 or 3.5 percent, over the past 12 months, while the number of unemployed jobseekers with construction fell to a record low for April, according to an analysis of new government data by AGC of America. Association officials said the unavailability of experienced construction workers underscores the importance of including initiatives to expand opportunities for construction careers as part of infrastructure funding legislation.

U.S. construction spending totaled $1.3 trillion in 2018. This investment supported a total of more than $4 trillion of spending throughout the economy. In addition, the U.S. construction industry has more than 7.4 million employees.

New this year, Future Focus is a supplemental issue of Constructor magazine to be published in the fall, that will hone in on game-changing construction technologies and provide members the resources they need to implement these technological advances. If you are like many construction firms fiercely competing for attention to stand out and separate your brand from other companies, you might be considering a rebrand or a brand overhaul. Once you make this decision, you likely are going to take a look at your logo and rally the troops to examine what can be done to make your audience notice your firm. Conversely, you may have a marketing team who has been suggesting you “change things up” with your brand and has been trying to get your attention to make this a priority.

The world is changing, and so is its population. Generation Z, also known as Gen Z, is a prime example of that change. It is estimated that by 2019, Gen Z could outnumber Millennials, accounting for as much as 30 percent of the global population. Although Generation Z is still relatively young, their impact on various industries, including the multifamily housing market, will be significant. It’s time we get to know them a little better.

Approximately 10,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur at work. The only definitive treatment for sudden cardiac arrest is effective CPR and a life-saving shock from an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). 

Turner Construction Company’s Memphis office has announced the completion of the $275 million, 450,000-square-foot patient tower at Methodist University Hospital (MUH). The nine-story patient tower was constructed on top of the already existing emergency department – built by Turner, a member of multiple AGC chapters, in 2014 – and is part of the hospital’s campus expansion project, which also includes a 700-space parking plaza that Turner completed in 2017. Called Shorb Tower, it is named in honor of recently retired Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare President and CEO, Gary Shorb.

Rosendin, a member of multiple AGC chapters, was announced recently as the new solar partner for Camp Colley, a summer adventure camp located on the Mogollon Rim in northern Arizona. As the camp’s solar partner, Rosendin will ensure that the camp and its facilities have consistent power to operate the camp.

Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com), a member of multiple AGC chapters, has promoted Nicole Calamaio to Vice President of Talent Management. In her new role, Calamaio is responsible for providing leadership in the areas of human resources, total rewards and administrative workforce development.
