Each year AGC of America conducts a survey of members involved in highway construction work to evaluate the state of highway work zone safety. We want to collect information on the number, severity, impacts and potential solutions to highway work zone crashes. Our intention is to use the information we collect from this survey as the main focus of a media and public education campaign we will launch the week before Memorial Day, the traditional start of the summer driving season.

Encore Electric was honored for having the nation’s best construction safety and wellness plan in 2018 by AGC of America. The association, which oversees the Willis Towers Watson Construction Safety Excellence Awards, an annual ranking of construction safety programs, noted that 57 other companies were also selected as winners for the quality of their safety programs. "Construction firms have many important obligations to meet in completing projects, but their most fundamental commitment is to ensure the safety of their workers," said Eddie Stewart, the association’s president, and president and chief executive officer of Caddell Construction in Montgomery, Ala. "These award winners have demonstrated the most effective and innovative ways to keep their job sites safe and their workers out of harm's way."

The construction industry is experiencing record economic activity with low unemployment and little expectation that the current domestic workforce can alone meet employment demand. Currently, our nation's immigration system provides the high-tech sector, agricultural businesses, and seasonal employers with options for guest workers. It does not for the construction industry.

 

As we plan for the sixth year of Safety Week, the construction industrywide education and awareness event set for May 6-10, 2019, we are excited by how much it has grown in reach and membership. Each year, we are able to engage more workers, clients, communities and families in important conversations about construction safety.

Women got the vote. Prohibition began. The National Football League was founded. And, the construction industry was forever changed by the invention of an often overlooked but significant worker safety advancement – the hard hat. And, while perhaps not considered a great technological invention now, at the time, the invention of the hard hat revolutionized and galvanized the businesses and the people behind the American industrial boom.

Industry peer groups are a great way for companies to break out of their bubble and share valuable insights with one another. Often though, CEOs and CFOs aren’t getting the most out of them. Peer groups, usually comprised of around 10 CEOs or other top-level executives, have a long history in the construction industry. The basic aim is to share experiences, challenges and opportunities in order to learn and grow stronger companies. Typically, this will involve sharing certain financial and operational information and discussing national trends.

AGC Georgia is proud to announce that Choate Construction Superintendent Brian Keaton received the prestigious Safety Leadership Award. In addition, 686 individual superintendents and foremen with no loss-time accidents or recordables from around the state received the Ron Amerson Supervisors’ Safety Award.
