AGC of America is proud to announce the launch of the 2021 AGC Awards competitions! The Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards (including the Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence category) and AGC in the Community competitions recognize the nation's most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, utility infrastructure, and federal and heavy divisions; those contractors excelling in their partnering and collaborative endeavors; and the charitable contractors and chapters giving back to their communities.
On Wednesday, September 2 at 1 p.m. EDT, AGC of America and Autodesk will release new data showing the current state of the construction workforce and how the coronavirus has impacted the sector nationwide as well as by region and state during a virtual media event. The new data is based on a comprehensive survey of construction firms and includes details on how the coronavirus is impacting construction jobs, the sector’s use of technology and what measures could help the industry grow again.

Stephen Sandherr and Ken Simonson, AGC’s CEO and chief economist respectively, will release the new data and identify measures public officials should take to support construction jobs and help the industry recover. Allison Scott, director of construction thought leadership and customer marketing at Autodesk, will discuss how technology can help address current workforce issues and support the industry. Construction contractors will discuss local labor conditions and the steps they are taking to cope with them.

Construction employment decreased from June to July in 26 states and the District of Columbia as earlier widespread job gains gave way to more project cancellations, according to an analysis by AGC of America of government employment data released recently. Association officials said construction employment is likely to continue falling in many parts of the country without new federal recovery measures, including liability reform and new infrastructure funding.

Succession planning done well

Succession planning can be daunting — but if the current principals determine early on who can best lead the company after they leave, and if they groom them thoroughly, the transition to the next generation leaders can be smoother.

New case study shares how general contractor used ingenuity to streamline customization

When Brasfield & Gorrie, a member of multiple AGC chapters, began construction on The Spires at Berry College in Rome, Georgia, it faced a complex project with challenges similar to other projects of its kind. The project, a continuing care retirement community with 170 units, allows future residents to choose from a host of design options for customizing their units before construction begins. Projects with this level of customization are prone to coordination problems, leading to time lost, rework, and frustration for the owner and residents. Brasfield & Gorrie sought to streamline the process of recording and applying the many customization choices. The resulting solution, developed by our assistant project manager, was a web-based application for residents to select their customizations. The project team’s ingenuity resulted in a valuable tool that will help our projects excel for years to come. The owner has requested use of this web-based application for upcoming projects.
The Boldt Company, a member of multiple AGC chapters, has been selected by CRB as the general trades partner on a project to build a new, 420,000-square-foot pet food manufacturing facility located in Ennis, Texas for Freshpet. Freshpet is a pet food company that focuses on making fresh, refrigerated food for pets and avoids using preservatives or additives. The facility is the third kitchen expansion for Freshpet in the United States.

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., a member of multiple AGC chapters, has completed construction of the Johnson County Medical Examiner Facility, a 32,000-square-foot, single-story building designed to meet the highest standards of the National Association of Medical Examiners (N.A.M.E.). Located at 11894 S. Sunset Drive in Olathe, Kansas, the facility is located in the heart of the Johnson County Government Campus and is adjacent to the crime lab as well as other county buildings.
Chapter News

As part of its chapter strategic plan started in 2019, Austin AGC leadership decided to begin offering more general industry training starting in 2020 and identified the new AGC Project Manager Development Program 2.0 (PMDP) class as the place to start. Through a partnership with the Austin office of Procore, this in-person class was scheduled to begin in May and be taught by one of their education specialists in town. Then, COVID-19 rocked the world and we suddenly discovered online meeting platforms (like Zoom or Microsoft Teams) and so offering training online became a much easier and widely accepted option as well.
