Sundt Selected As Contractor for Ohlone Community College

Within weeks of opening a San José office, Sundt Construction, Inc., an AGC member of multiple chapters, has been selected as the lease/leaseback contractor for Ohlone Community College’s  academic core project.

The $135 million project slated for the Fremont, Calif., campus consists of three multi-story buildings totaling 185,000 sq ft. The new buildings will feature two tiered lecture halls, science labs, visual art studios, large music classrooms, music practice and recording rooms and 100 faculty and administrative offices. The buildings, which step uphill, gaining approximately 85 feet in elevation, also will have a two-story learning commons with a library and tutorial center, as well as a new central utility plant connecting to a geothermal heat exchange loop system.

"While site planning the new academic core project, we focused on creating a plan that minimizes the impact to Ohlone Community College’s ongoing campus operations during construction," said Sundt Vice President and Regional Director Teri Jones. "Ohlone College is ranked as one of the top community colleges in the state and this project will revitalize the 1970s campus."

Before construction can begin on the new buildings, Sundt will oversee the demolition of three existing buildings on the campus. Portable classroom buildings will be constructed across both Ohlone College campuses, in Fremont and Newark, Calif., to temporarily support programs and activities displaced by the academic core project construction. Preconstruction on the project began in January, with construction scheduled to begin in summer 2015. The project is anticipated to be completed in January 2018.

Sundt, with years of community college and laboratory construction experience, will work with Cannon Design and Anderson-Brule Architects on the Fremont campus project. The academic core project is funded by the district’s Measure G bond, which supports the Ohlone Community College District’s efforts toward upgrades for earthquake safety, updating classroom technology, repairing aging mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, improving disability access and renovating instructional space.

In November 2013, Sundt expanded its physical presence to the Bay area, opening a new office in San José. The general contractor currently has more than $400 million of construction underway in the Silicon Valley region, including projects at California State University, East Bay and San Jose State University and the new San Mateo County Correctional Facility.
