C.W. Driver Completes Construction on $20 Million Bloomingdale's Project

The paperless job site is here. C.W. Driver, a premiere builder serving California since 1919 and an AGC of California member, has recently completed construction on a 127,000-sq-ft Bloomingdale’s department store, using iPad applications and technologies that allow a paperless job site to create a crisp and efficient construction time table for the new store. Located in the Glendale Galleria, on the corner of Broadway and Brand Blvd. in Glendale, Calif., the $20 million renovation now occupies the two-level space which formerly housed Mervyn’s.

"The emergence of new technology is constantly reshaping our work site environment," said Brett Curry, vice president with C.W. Driver. "Staying at the forefront of these new developments is improving our productivity to keep us on a rigorous timetable."

This project marks the first C.W. Driver paperless job site as a result of the company’s use of the Bluebeam Revu application on iPads throughout the construction process. This application allows the entire project team to communicate with all stakeholders, share documents and make revisions to project plans in one cohesive program on-site for the most efficient delivery method, creating a more professional process for sharing information.

"Using this iPad application on site eliminates up to 40 hours a month of going back and forth with minor revisions," said Curry. "This kind of efficiency was especially vital on this project in order to finish before the holidays."

The scope of C.W. Driver’s work on the project included both interior and exterior renovations executed to mirror the Bloomingdale’s shopping experience in its SoHo and Santa Monica locations. Additionally, a project goal was to enhance the curb appeal of the site and attract local shoppers to the center.

Bloomingdale’s Glendale joins a number of other C.W. Driver retail projects, including the Bloomingdale’s stores in the Santa Monica Place Mall located in Santa Monica, Calif. and the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Joining Curry on the project team is Brett Ivey, project manager; Jim Gentile, superintendent; Mike Morrell, superintendent; Cory Rhodes, assistant project manager; Thomas Mills, project engineer; Paul Lindley, assistant superintendent; and Tom Zaczyk, scheduling lead. Hixson Architecture, Engineering, Interiors was the architect on the project.

Construction on the project began in early 2013 and opened in time for holiday sales.
