PC Construction Begins Work on Two Residence Halls

PC Construction, an AGC of Vermont and a Carolinas AGC member, has started work on two new residence halls at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt. that will house 180 students when completed in July 2014. The Res Tri Project consists of three residence halls, green space, landscaping and a promenade in the area bounded by Main Street, South Willard Street, Maple Street and Edmunds School on the 4.66-acre site.

A central promenade from Main Street to Roger H. Perry Hall will provide access to classrooms, dining halls, residence halls and administrative offices. The promenade creates an internal student walkway that will draw students off the public sidewalks to an internal campus environment.

Phase I of this project was the construction of the first residence hall - Juniper Hall with 95 beds - which was completed by PC Construction in July 2012 for fall occupancy. Phase II construction began at the end of March. A cornerstone of Champlain College's master plan is to house 90 percent of the college's student body on campus. The Res Tri Project is the next significant component in attaining the goals of the plan, according to John Caulo, associate vice president of Campus Planning & Auxiliary Services.

Like Juniper Hall, which was constructed by PC Construction last year, the two new residential halls, Butler and Valcour, will be built with views overlooking Lake Champlain and the three islands after which they are named. The two buildings will be constructed simultaneously, staggered by only six weeks. With a 15-month construction schedule, PC Construction said the project will be mostly enclosed during the winter season, ready for site finishes next spring and open to students in July 2014.  The new buildings will incorporate geothermal heat pumps to handle the heating and cooling of the buildings.
