McKinstry Assists Washington State Higher Education Institutions and Municipalities to Secure $5.8 Million in Grants from 2012 Jobs Now Act

With the help of McKinstry, a leader in construction, energy and facility services and an AGC member of several chapters, six higher education institutions and nine municipalities across Washington state have received more than $5 million in grant funding in the latest round of the 2012 Jobs Now Act.

The funding will allow each grantee to make improvements to their facilities in order to make the buildings more energy efficient, safer and more enjoyable for students, patients, staff and visitors. Leveraging additional local funding sources, the $5.8 million in grants will result in more than $13 million in project work.

"We appreciate McKinstry's expertise in guiding us through the needs assessment and application process for the Jobs Now Energy Grant," said Mike Young, facility manager, Island Hospital in Anacortes. "The award could not have come at a better time as we work to upgrade our energy plant with efficient components that will improve the patient experience."

With the grant money, the organizations will be able to replace or upgrade old and outdated facility systems such as air handling, water, heating and lighting systems, while lowering energy usage and waste and providing substantial financial savings.

Approved by the Washington State Legislature in April 2012, the 2012 Jobs Now Act has allocated to competitive grant programs that fund energy and operational cost-saving improvements in public buildings across the state.

State Representative Hans Dunshee (D - 44th district), an advocate of getting the Jobs Now Act passed through the state Legislature, said, "We have an urgent need to put the construction industry back to work. The projects funded by the Jobs Now Act will put people back to work in the hard hit construction industry, while making our public facilities safer and healthier for people to work and kids to learn."
