The Middle Tennessee Chapter of AGC has awarded to Turner Construction’s Nashville office its prestigious Build Tennessee Awards for the company’s work on the Saint Thomas Health Joint Replacement Center project.

The annual Build Tennessee Awards program recognizes construction excellence across the state. Turner’s work at Saint Thomas Health received AGC’s Award of Excellence, the highest honor available within the Build Tennessee Awards. Turner was honored in the $16-18 million renovation category.

Completed in August 2015, the $16.7 million, 67,200-sq-ft Joint Replacement Center is located on the eighth floor of Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital. The cutting-edge facility for surgeons and supporting staff members allows them to provide the highest quality experience to their orthopedic patients.

To create the Joint Replacement Center, Turner converted three patient wings and a medical imaging department into a pre-operative medicine clinic, a sterile processing department, prep and recovery bays and eight surgery suites. Two ancillary patient floors were also renovated to relocate three patient floors/departments before construction could begin on the surgery suites and supporting areas.

To meet an aggressive 12-month schedule, Turner was part of an integrated project delivery (IPD) approach, a method in which the builder collaborates closely with the owner (Saint Thomas Health), architect (Freeman White) and engineer (TME, Inc.). Open and regular communication among the team ensured that the highest quality facility was built – and was done so with zero interruption to patient care throughout the project’s duration.

"We are honored to win this AGC Award of Excellence on behalf of Saint Thomas, our partner in creating outstanding health care facilities in Nashville for nearly 30 years," said Kevin Williams, special project division manager at Turner Construction. "The completion of the Joint Replacement Center has positioned Saint Thomas Health as an elite orthopedic provider and further solidified its role as market leader for total joint replacement. It’s a privilege to have helped its team achieve this goal."

"The Joint Replacement Center at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital is a key element of the Saint Thomas Joint Replacement Institute," said John Michael Eargle, Saint Thomas Health vice president for the orthopedic service line. "The Institute model focuses on creating a superior experience for both the patient and the physician in the joint replacement space. These patients have unique needs and their physicians are highly skilled surgeons committed to the highest quality results. We are so pleased that our focus on consistent, effective processes is supported and enhanced by our physical environment."

Winners of the 2016 Build Tennessee Awards were recognized at the ACG awards dinner and presentation on Feb. 18 at the Loveless Barn.

Turner also received Build Tennessee Awards for the following projects:
