Commodore Builders, a leading general contractor and construction management firm in Newton, Mass., has been named one of The Boston Globe’s 100 Best Places to Work in 2013. The survey, which was distributed to more than 76,000 employees, highlighted how a positive company culture and employee appreciation are top factors that contributed to employee happiness, rivaling quantitative factors such as pay and benefits.

Founded in 2002 by Joe Albanese, Commodore Builders, an AGC of Massachusetts member, provides a full range of construction services, from project conception, to pre-construction, execution, close-out and warranty service. Unlike other firms, Commodore’s executives are actively involved in every project. They’re in the field, leading project teams, listening to clients and driving the strategies that ensure successful project outcome.

Commodore has an open culture, based on performance and learning. Employees of the firm describe feeling acknowledged and appreciated for their work, while others note the firm’s team atmosphere and the opportunity to balance professional and personal demands as being key differentiators.

Commodore credits its success to motivated employees who are able to deliver on the firm’s six Qualities of Excellence, behaviors that enable employees to turn the company’s mission into excellent execution for their clients. The Qualities include the confidence to take charge, the capacity to anticipate, the ability to focus on the details, the spirit to collaborate, the creativity to innovate and the knowledge to problem-solve. Abiding by these guidelines and being measured by them allow employees to succeed and to set a new standard of excellence for the construction industry.

"We are honored that our employees’ feedback has earned us a spot on this year’s list," said Joe Albanese, founder and CEO of Commodore Builders. "It very rewarding to know our people love what they do. "Their happiness and satisfaction is extremely important to us.  We’re continually working to create an environment that meets their personal and professional needs.  Happy people are productive and innovative and great to be around."

Commodore Builders is currently involved in a number of projects, including the preconstruction of 275 Wyman Street with Hobbs Brook Management; construction of 1265 Main Street, a 280,000-sq-ft mixed-use development on I-95/Rt. 128 in Waltham; construction of the new 39,000-sq-ft Room & Board furniture store on Newbury Street; and a 100,000-sq-ft interior and exterior renovation at Tufts University. Additionally, Commodore is engaged with several pharmaceutical firms, including Biogen Idec, Shire and Merrimack Pharmaceuticals. Looking forward to 2014, Commodore has a number of projects lined up throughout the Boston area, including work with Urban Meritage LLC on an interior and exterior renovation on Newbury Street and renovation of 126,000 square feet of space on seven floors of the Josiah Quincy Building in Quincy, for State Street Bank.
