New Program Prepares Colorado's Next Generation of Industry Leaders

The AGC of Colorado (AGC/C) board of directors and AGC Education Foundation announced recently the establishment of a new Executive Leadership Academy. The AGC Executive Leadership Academy, which was created to support and prepare Colorado's next generation of contractor leaders, hosted its first sessions in late February. Up to 30 participants were nominated by their firms to attend the three-day program.

David Morrill, a member of the AGC of Colorado's Management Committee and past chairman commented, "The Executive Leadership Academy was established to provide mentoring and training to future leaders within an organization. The curriculum is specifically designed to assist in the transition from project management to corporate management, leadership and strategic decision making. AGC's Education Foundation will receive all proceeds."

The AGC Executive Leadership Academy sessions addressed risk management, leadership functions and business strategies specific to the Colorado market. Participants were given the opportunity to learn from and network with experts in innovation, finance, crisis management, relationship management and other key business areas. Additionally, some notable speakers included:

  • Ken Lund, director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade
  • Tom Clark, chief executive officer, Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation; executive vice president, Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce
  • Dick C. Saunders, founder, chairman emeritus, Saunders Construction, Inc,
  • Rusty Sherwood, senior consultant, FMI Center for Strategic Leadership
  • Gene Commander, office managing shareholder, Polsinelli Shughart

"Workforce development is once again a top three issue in our industry. AGC is proud to offer this opportunity for leading construction firms to accelerate profitable growth by investing in their top people,"commented Michael Gifford, president of AGC of Colorado.

The AGC Executive Leadership Academy was established in association with the Denver office of national law firm Polsinelli Shughart and management consulting and investment firm FMI Corp. Proceeds from the program will benefit the AGC Education Foundation to help fund future Executive Leadership Academies and other workforce development programs.
