AGC of America is proud to announce the launch of the 2020 AGC Awards competitions! The Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards (including the Marvin M. Black Partnering Excellence category) and AGC in the Community competitions recognize the nation’s most impressive construction projects ranging across the building, highway and transportation, utility infrastructure, and federal and heavy divisions; those contractors excelling in their partnering and collaborative endeavors; and the charitable contractors and chapters giving back to their communities.

As demand for construction in most parts of the country continues to expand and the number of unemployed construction workers hits record low levels, AGC of America and Autodesk are working to better quantify where these shortages are taking place, how severe they are, and what steps firms are taking to both cope with tight labor markets and improve the supply of new, qualified workers. That is why we are asking members to take a few minutes to complete the workforce survey that we have prepared. The more people understand the scope, and consequences, of a tight construction labor market, the more likely they are to act on the measures we are promoting to make it easier for school systems, local associations and private firms to establish career and technical education and training programs. The more members who take the survey, the better able we all will be to describe labor market conditions where you operate.
Review the CSEA Safety Management Best Practices
The AGC-Willis Towers Watson Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) recognizes those construction companies who excel at safety performance. The CSEA closely examines each candidate's commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. Unlike other safety award programs that limit the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive. Each application is reviewed for evidence of company management commitment, active employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation. Over the past five years, the finalist judges have produced the CSEA Safety Management Best Practices to share the highlights noted during the competition with the construction industry and any organization that places a high value on safety leadership. Please take the time to read through the Best Practices, which has many takeaways for contractors looking to strengthen their safety program and feel free to share it with others. 
Regulatory & Legislative Updates
Discourages legislative need for one-size- fits-all-standard
On July 11, Kevin Cannon, AGC’s Senior Director of Safety and Health Services, testified before the House Committee on Education and Labor’s Subcommittee on Workforce Protections on the topic of heat exposure in the industry. Cannon testified to AGC’s thorough, proactive work on this subject and informed lawmakers that legislation mandating the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to quickly formulate a one-size-fits-all national standard to address workplace heat exposure is unwarranted. In addition, AGC pointed out how the Obama administration’s OSHA previously denied a petition for such a standard given existing agency authorities to take enforcement action when heat hazards exist on the jobsite. At AGC’s Leadership in Construction Workshop, participants discover their personal leadership style and how to communicate and work with people who have different approaches. This is accomplished through various team activities and a series of personal assessments, including a 360 survey to identify how their manager, direct reports and peers interpret their performance. Participants leave with a detailed, practical action plan for implementing the new communication strategies.

Encore Electric wins the 2019 CSEA Grand Award
“Safety is more than just not doing things wrong. It’s about doing things right.” So says Jack Cain, health and safety director, Encore Electric. His advice is worth taking, since the safety program he oversees was declared the Grand Winner of the 2019 Willis Towers Watson Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) at AGC’s 100th Annual Convention in April. The award was announced during the recent AGC convention in Denver, Colorado.

Construction workers make up approximately 4 percent of the country’s workforce but account for an average of 19 percent of all job-related fatalities each year. Consistently, over the past five years approximately 35-39 percent of those fatalities are from falls. Falls account for the greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry, especially among small businesses and businesses with Hispanic workers. In addition, fall protection violations continue to be among the most-cited standards in the construction industry. AGC of America is pleased to offer this one-day training program based on OSHA standards and best practices to answer the need for quality training within the industry. Classes are offered at various locations and dates throughout the year.
