The state will add more air pollution testing this summer around crude oil terminals at the Port of Albany as part of plans that also call for a 21-county network of state-funded spill response equipment and training where crude oil trains routinely travel, the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced.

It's easy to imagine that in the risky job of firefighting, such events as collapsing buildings and explosions would cause most firefighter deaths. But sudden cardiovascular events are what cause most firefighter fatalities in the line of duty. And right along with them is another concern: an emerging link between firefighters and some cancers.

The president of the New York Fire Department’s women’s coalition says recent legislation enacted by Mayor Bill de Blasio to improve the FDNY's hiring practices is a victory for her group, which pushed hard for the bill. But she concedes that it will take more than legislation to make a dent in the department's diversity problem.
