In partnership with PERMA, NYSAFC is offering a new three-hour workshop, "Fire/EMS Behavioral Health: The Price We Pay." The free workshop will be presented by Past Chief Mike Healy (Central Nyack Fire Department) and Chief Jared Meeker (Lake Shore Fire District) in Chautauqua (September 30), Clinton (September 14), Fulton (April 16), Herkimer (April 14), Monroe (September 15), Nassau (September 21), Schenectady (May 6), and Westchester (May 7) Counties.
 
 
   
Registration is open for NYSAFC's 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb to be held in conjunction with the 114th Annual Conference & FIRE 2020 Expo in Syracuse. Join us on June 12, 8:00 a.m. at AXA Towers, just a quick walk from The Oncenter expo venue. Proceeds will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and FDNY Counseling Services Unit.
 
Due to an overwhelming response, on-site registration will NOT be available for the COLT programs in Monroe County (February 28-29) and Erie County (March 13-14). The Monroe County program is completely SOLD OUT, and due to the large number of registrants, the venue has been changed to the Henrietta Fire District Training Center - Station 6. Limited seating is still available for the Erie County program at the Orchard Park Fire Company. Pre-registration is required.
 
 
   
NYSAFC is pleased to announce a new date for the 2020 Seminar Series in Nassau County! Join us for Hoarder House Fires: Our Worst Nightmare with Lieutenant Tim Klett (FDNY) on September 24 at the Woodmere Fire Department. Seminars will also be held in Chautauqua, Chemung, Clinton, Erie, Fulton, Oneida, Onondaga, Otsego, Rensselaer, Rockland, St. Lawrence/Franklin, Westchester, and Wyoming Counties.

New decontamination protocols will reduce firefighters’ exposure to toxic contaminants. Educational sessions will be held statewide to promote use of the protocols. New educational video has been released to raise awareness of the cancer risk facing firefighters.
 
State Supreme Court justice rejected the city of Lockport's attempt to invalidate a state arbitrator's order to hire 12 more firefighters.
 
The city believes the decision to leave the historic Beacon Engine fire house and invest in its two remaining fire houses will improve public safety, in addition to saving money.
 
Firefighter Daniel Foley passed away at the age of 46 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Foley spent months at ground zero searching for victims, including his firefighter brother, Thomas, who died on 9/11.
 
In a field dominated by men, Toni Washington, Vera Morrison, and Ninetta Violante lead the only fire department in the country where the top three positions are held by women.
 
Watertown Fire Department Chief Dale Herman will retire at the end of the month.
 
Anthony Agresta replaces former chief Michael Whitty, who recently retired.
 
Tim Richardson was confirmed as the 26th chief of the Olean Fire Department by the Common Council. He succeeds Bob Bell, who took on the role in 2000.

Regional Hands-On Training opportunities are available at sites across New York state! Flashover training is now scheduled for Franklin, Orleans, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Ulster, and Wayne Counties, and the new Fire Behavior on the Inside program will be held in Ulster County.
 
The Eastern Division International Association of Fire Chiefs (EDIAFC) 93rd Annual Conference will be held May 15-16, 2020, at the Latham Fire Department - Station 1 in Albany County.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs has compiled resources for chiefs, as fire and EMS agencies consider how to best prepare for and respond to occurrences of the Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV).
