Since 2002, almost two out of every three firefighters who died in the line of duty died of cancer, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.
 
The Rochester City Council passed a staffing change to the Rochester Fire Department that drew the ire of the department’s union.
 
The Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety impaneled a steering committee to specify requirements of a new training facility after the current facility was deemed structurally unsound. For more than 35 years, classroom, live burn, and related training exercises have been conducted at the facility.
 
Luis Alvarez, a retired NYPD detective, and other advocates testified before Congress to call for the reauthorization of the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund.
 
A ceremony was held this month to rename an intersection in Queens for a longtime fire chief who led rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

Regional Hands-On Training – Flashover is coming soon to sites across New York state! Programs will be held in Columbia (October 26-27), Erie (September 28-29), Jefferson (September 7-8), Ontario (October 19-20), Saratoga (September 14-15), and Steuben (June 29-30) Counties.
 
 
   
Fire personnel in Erie and Suffolk Counties and the surrounding regions – don't miss this FREE training opportunity! NYSAFC's 16-hour training will be held at the Orchard Park Fire Company (July 12-13) and Holtsville Fire Department (July 27-28). This program will assist departments in meeting the best practices for the person riding in and commanding from the front right seat of any fire apparatus.
