New law will require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop and maintain a voluntary registry to collect data regarding the the occurrence of cancer in firefighters.

Firefighter Zachary J. Fazekas, 19, had been with the New Hyde Park Fire Department for two years.
 
The seven-acre facility - which was first conceptualized in 2015 and saw its first class of trainees this month - is designed to help New York state first responders prepare for severe flooding and other extreme water rescues by training them under controlled conditions.
 
Officials have said without an influx of volunteers, the department may have to close at year's end.
 
Michael J. Fahy, a FDNY battalion chief, was the incident commander on a call about a gas smell coming from a house in the Bronx in 2016. The house exploded, and he was struck by the debris and killed.
 
Joseph Pfeifer has been a firefighter for 37 years, and was the first chief to respond on 9/11.
