After several years of not having a legislative event in Albany, in May of 2011, NYSAFC unveiled a new program for interaction between our members and members of the New York State Legislature.

Association members from across the state of New York came to Albany on May 16, 2011, to learn about state government activities and about the legislative agendas of FASNY, the Association of Fire Districts State of New York, and the New York City Association Fire Chiefs, as well as the "Issues of United Concern." In fact, for 2011 the NYSAFC board of directors decided that instead of having an individual legislative agenda, it would simply support the "Issues of United Concern." NYSAFC's Government Affairs Committee Chairman Fred Theadore and State Sub-Committee Vice Chairman Lee Shurtleff, as well as the entire committee put a great deal of effort in putting this year's program together. It was viewed as a great success by board members and attendees alike.

During morning educational programs Interim Director James Sherry of the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) addressed the group to discuss the interactions of the DHSES and fire departments. He also discussed the positive impact of this year's budget.

After the morning's educational programs attendees then went to meet with members of the Legislature in both the Assembly and Senate. O
verall the meetings were quite productive. Members were also introduced on the floor of both the Assembly and Senate.

Plans are already underway for next year's program. We expect to work even closer with the other state fire service organizations and look forward to having a very productive program in 2012.

Thanks to all who participated!
