Smoke alarm facts, as well as information on how to properly use and maintain these life-saving devices, can now be shared with your community members by using NYSAFC’s smoke alarm infographic. This new tool was developed with fire safety educators in mind, who are often searching for new resources and unique ways to reach members of the public.

The eye-catching image includes basic information about smoke alarms, such as where they should be placed and how they should be maintained. It also includes information about the different types of alarms that are available, such as hard-wired smoke alarms and specialty alarms for the hearing impaired. Because the graphic matches the accompanying text, the infographic can be used when educating children and low-literacy adults, who might have difficulty reading and understanding a typical tip sheet that includes a lot of text. The smoke alarm infographic is also a useful tool for reaching adults who have become accustomed to rapid information sharing. Newer fire safety education techniques have become more focused in order to accommodate shorter attention spans and the need to convey just the key concepts in minimal time.

The smoke alarm infographic was designed to have a similar look as the association’s recently released sprinkler infographic, which was introduced in October 2018. Both documents were created as part of NYSAFC’s FEMA FP&S grant, which concluded in January 2019. The infographics are being shared nationwide through various public educator groups and coalitions.

The smoke alarm infographic is available for free download from NYSAFC’s online Smoke Alarm Resource Center. The image can be printed or used in digital communications. In addition, the image has already been formatted for easy use in social media posts and sharing. Public fire safety educators are encouraged to incorporate the infographic into their upcoming community education activities to spread the word about the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home! Also, don't forget to visit NYSAFC's online Home Fire Sprinkler Advocacy & Awareness Toolbox for more fire safety education resources.
