NYSAFC is pleased to announce that it was recently awarded funding from the New York State Department of Labor to conduct a "Commanding From the Front Seat" training program. The goal of the program is to improve the incident command knowledge and skills of junior officers and firefighters; however, all levels of the fire service are welcome to attend. The class will be provided free of charge, but participants must commit to attending both days of the weekend training.

The 16-hour, intensive skills training program will incorporate the best practices for incident command. These skills include fireground tactics, strategies, communication, decision-making, resource allocation, situational awareness, hazardous environment management, and basic leadership. Ultimately, the training will help fire departments across the state achieve the new best practices recommendations set forth in 2015 by the New York State Department of Labor and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control in the Recommended Best Practices for Fire Department Training Programs document. The training will feature a combination of lecture, class interactions, discussion, role playing, and other interactive exercises. As a result, classes will be limited to 32 participants per site, with up to four participants per department.

Classes will be held from January through May 2019. Any department interested in hosting a "Commanding From the Front Seat" weekend training should email NYSAFC Grants Administrator Sue Syzdek.
