NYSAFC is pleased to announce that it will continue to offer its popular Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander training program in 2018. The association was recently awarded continued funding from the New York State Department of Labor’s Hazard Abatement Board to support the program. The grant award will allow NYSAFC to conduct eight training workshops in various regions of the state during winter and spring of 2018.

The Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander training is a 16-hour workshop that is designed to assist fire departments in meeting the Recommended Best Practices for Fire Department Training Programs as outlined by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control and referenced by the New York State Department of Labor’s Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau.

Through lecture and discussion, along with class activities and case studies, students learn and apply the principles of fireground safety and supervision. Exercises include fire emergencies, car accidents, hazardous materials incidents, water and flooding emergencies, train derailments, and other unique emergency response scenes. Due to the format of the workshop and materials covered, classes are limited to 28 participants per site, with no more than four participants per department. The training is free for all participants.

Any department interested in hosting a Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander workshop during the upcoming project year should email NYSAFC Grants Administrator Sue Syzdek by September 15, 2017. The site must have a training room with audio-visual capabilities and must be able to accommodate 28 participants. The 16-hour workshop is conducted on weekends, typically running Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Workshops will be conducted from January through May 2018.

A complete training schedule will be available on the NYSAFC website in October 2017.

Under previous grant awards, NYSAFC conducted 16 Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander workshops in Orchard Park, Hammondsport, Rochester, Alplaus, New Hampton, Solvay, Barneveld, Pomona, Johnstown, Sayville, Canastota, West Crescent, Binghamton, Elmsford, Clifton Park, and Warsaw, NY. More than 375 firefighters and fire officers have been reached by the training to date.

Email NYSAFC Grants Administrator Sue Syzdek with questions regarding this training.
