The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs is pleased to announce the 111th Annual Conference & FIRE 2017 Expo Keynote Address "The Price We Pay," presented by Firefighter Scott Geiselhart, Frazee (MN) Fire Department and Chief Mike Healy, Central Nyack Fire Department. The program, open to all attendees, will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the Turning Stone Resort Showroom.

In July 2014, Scott Geiselhart, a 20-year veteran of the fire service, put his favorite handgun to his head and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired. Scott had been experiencing the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for years as a result of his dedication to his community and the fire service. Stories about the horrors of PTSD and the consequences from across the country are finally beginning to make their way to the forefront of our field. Yet, based on research from the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance, it is estimated that only 40 percent of actual firefighter/EMT suicides are reported. During this discussion, Scott will take you through the horror that he experienced from the beginning to end, including his recovery. He will be joined by Mike Healy to review some of the causes of PTSD in the emergency services and provide information about the help that can be received to prevent the many tragedies that seem to be increasing in our field each year.

The NYSAFC 111th Annual Conference & FIRE 2017 Expo will be held June 14-17, 2017, at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. Learn more here.
