NYSAFC was recently awarded continued funding from the New York State Department of Labor’s Hazard Abatement Board to support the Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander training program. The grant award will allow NYSAFC to conduct eight training workshops in various regions of the state during winter and spring of 2017.

The Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander training is a 16-hour workshop that is designed to assist fire departments in meeting the Best Practices for Incident Commanders as outlined by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control and referenced by the New York State Department of Labor Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau.

Through lecture and discussion, along with class activities and case studies, students learn and apply the principles of fireground safety and supervision. Exercises include fire emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous materials incidents, water and flooding emergencies, train derailments, and other unique emergency response scenes. Due to the format of the workshop and materials covered, classes are limited to 24 participants per site, with no more than four participants per department. The training is free for all participants.

NYSAFC is seeking departments to host the Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander workshop during the upcoming project year. The site must have a training room with audio-visual capabilities and must be able to accommodate 24 participants. The 16-hour workshop is conducted on weekends, typically running Friday (6:00-10:00 p.m.), Saturday (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.), and Sunday (8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.). Workshops will be conducted from January through June of 2017.

Departments interested in hosting a class should
email NYSAFC Grants Administrator Sue Syzdek by October 19, 2016.

A complete training schedule will be made available on the NYSAFC website.

Under a previous grant award, NYSAFC conducted eight Fireground Responsibilities of the Incident Commander workshops in Orchard Park, Hammondsport, Rochester, Alplaus, New Hampton, Solvay, Barneveld, and Pomona, NY. More than 175 firefighters and fire officers were reached during the first year of the project and class feedback was very positive.
