Don’t miss the unique training opportunities available through NYSAFC’s Hands-On Training Program during FIRE 2013, the NYSAFC 107th Annual Conference & Expo in Verona, N.Y. Each session is conducted by some of the leading fire service instructors in the nation.

Course prerequisites (or equivalents) for all programs:
Firefighter I OR Basic Firefighter and Intermediate Firefighter OR Firefighting Essentials and Initial Fire Attack. Each student must also provide a signed authorization letter from the chief of his/her department (sample letter will be provided).

Advanced Thermal Imaging Camera Ops
(8-Hour Live Fire Program)
When was the last time you trained with a TIC? Most firefighters will answer, "At the last fire or fire event." The instructors for this program have spent many years working with thermal imagers and have found more uses than you can imagine to get the most out of your department’s TIC investment. Students will be armed with knowledge to take back to their departments to ensure that the camera is one of the first tools off the vehicle at more than just fire events. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Aggressive Interior Fire Attack
(8-Hour Live Fire Program)
This intense program is a unique opportunity for you to put your skills to work in live fire. Students will join seasoned instructors as they review techniques that are essential for survival in today’s fire environment. Skills that will be enhanced in this program include effective and efficient hose stretches, hose loads, hoseline operation, standpipe and defensive operations. This program will push you to your limits, challenging you to become one of the best firefighters in New York state. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Truck Company Series: Forcible Entry
(8-Hour Live Fire Program)
As the world changes and crime increases, people are protecting themselves in different ways. You may think you’ve mastered the art of forcible entry, but the veteran instructors for this program will show you otherwise. Today’s basic forcible entry techniques are a must for the everyday firefighter in every community. If you can’t get into the building, the fire grows and the life safety of citizens and firefighters is at high risk. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Truck Company Series: Ladders & Roof Ops
(8-Hour Live Fire Program)
In this program, students will be challenged by some of the country’s best fire instructors in roof ventilation and ground ladder operations. These instructors have years of experience laddering and "opening up" fire buildings. They will share safety tips and their vast knowledge of roof ventilation, ground ladders, and one of the most aggressive life safety operations – searching for victims above the fire floor. Throwing ground ladders for building access and egress, roof operations, and other special uses of ground ladders will be covered. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Truck Company Series: Search & Retrieving Victims
(8-Hour Live Fire Program)
Sometimes the most dangerous operations on the fireground are done without the protection of a hoseline. In this program, you will be taxed beyond the normal search techniques taught in recruit school. The most obvious challenge is making sure you and your partner stay alive and complete the mission. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Flashover
(2-Hour Live Fire Program)
Thank God you’ve never experienced a flashover. It is said that if you are more than five feet from the doorway, your chance of survival in a flashover is minimal. Working in this program, you’ll experience fire development from the incipient stage all the way to flashover. You will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of the event before you are part of the flashover. If you’ve never been in a flashover container, this program – staffed by America’s most seasoned instructors with years of experience teaching with a simulator – is a must. PPE Requirements: Turnout coats and helmets will be provided for this program to avoid heat and smoke damage to your department’s gear. Students must bring bunker pants, hoods, gloves, SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Advanced Vehicle Extrication
(8-Hour Program)
This program will provide students with a fast paced extrication experience that will include all aspects of vehicle extrication, from stabilization to plenty of tool time. Evolutions will include wheel, roof, and side resting vehicles with minimized vehicle access. Students will be challenged to use their skills to perform a scenario-based extrication with victim rescues, scene hazard recognition, and mitigation. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls). Students do not need to bring their SCBA.

Haz-Mat: Emergency Response to Ethanol Incidents
(12-Hour, 2-Day Live Fire Program)
This program will provide practical training for mitigating spills and fires involving fuel grade ethanol. Topics to be covered will include an overview of ethanol as a fuel, use of class B foam with emphasis on alcohol resistant foam concentrates, foam nozzles and proportioning equipment, and determining foam needs for various scenarios. The program will also include practical activities involving vapor suppression with finished foam, confining spills, and live fire extinguishment. During live fire evolutions, foam handlines will be set up and employed for a leaking and burning tank truck. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Multifaceted Elevator Rescue
(8-Hour Program)
You’ve all been to an elevator rescue that has gone wrong. This program, conducted by the best elevator rescue teams in the country, will help students understand all facets of elevator rescue. Working in actual elevators, students will perform real life rescues. You’ll leave this program with the advanced knowledge required for operations in both modern and older elevators. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls). Students do not need to bring their SCBA.

Rapid Intervention/FAST/Survival
(8-Hour Program)
Does the rapid intervention team concept work in your department? It all begins with self-survival techniques. Students in this program will work hard while identifying what’s working and what’s not working with the RIT/FAST programs in their departments. You’ll leave with a new outlook on the RIT/FAST/survival program, along with information that can be taken back to your department for positive change. This is a fast-paced and fun program that will pay off in the future for your department. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls), SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student.

Rope Rescue
(8-Hour Program)
This program is a must for firefighters that have identified problem areas where workers or others may find themselves hanging from precarious positions, or where citizens may fall into the many caverns and gorges so notable in New York state. If you think your rope rescue team is ready, this program will challenge you with the latest equipment and newest procedures for rope rescue. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment, SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student plus steel toe work boots and work gloves for other rope support activities.

Trench Rescue
(8-Hour Program)
Many fire departments are called to respond to incidents where a construction worker or a member of the department of public works has become trapped in a trench collapse. There is much more to these incidents than just jumping into the trench to rescue the victim. This program will encompass working in and around live and active trenches. It will provide you with the appropriate means of rescue, while also preventing rescuers from becoming victims. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full protective equipment, SCBA, and one spare cylinder per student, plus steel toe work boots and work gloves for other trench support activities.

Water Supply Ops
(8-Hour Program)
So, you think you can move water in your department? This program will show methods for moving even more at your next fire scene. Rural or suburban departments, with minimal or no fire hydrant systems available, will greatly benefit from this program. And if you think the municipal water system in your response area is not subject to failure, think again. With the aging infrastructure in New York state, this program is a must for everyone working in the fire service. PPE Requirements: Students must bring their own OSHA compliant full firefighter protective equipment (no jumpsuits or coveralls). Students do not need to bring their SCBA.
