NENA is pleased to open the nominations process for our 2016-2017 Executive Board election! This election will be for the following positions:
  • Second Vice President
  • Southeastern Region Director 
  • Western Region Director
  • Private Sector Director
All nominees must be current members in good standing for at least three years; have been employed for at least three years in 9-1-1; be certified Emergency Number Professionals (ENPs); and meet the minimum threshold of membership, leadership, and certification requirements as outlined in the Nomination Form. Nominees for the position of Region Director must reside in the region they wish to represent.

Location: It All Starts With "Where?"

Ask any dispatcher in any PSAP what is the first question they ask to a 9-1-1 caller, and it will most likely be: "What is the location of your emergency?" Ask anyone working on any NG9-1-1 related project about his or her biggest challenge, and their answer will likely involve location. Ask the FCC about the most important efforts they have undertaken in recent years, and the rule regarding cell phone location accuracy will be high on their list. Finally, if you have any doubt regarding the importance of location in 9-1-1, review the media reports from the string of recent tragedies where responders were delayed because of location-related issues.

It is apparent that location is the common recurring theme in both the operational and technical issues that face our 9-1-1 community today. With the recent FCC action, NG9-1-1 implementations, and the ever-increasing percentage of 9-1-1 calls made from cell phones and other non-landline devices, location will only grow in significance in the coming years.

The departure of an Education Advisory Board (EAB) member has created a vacancy on the committee. NENA is looking to fill the open seat with a NENA member in good standing who possesses the desire and dedication to become part of the team charged with carrying out NENA’s educational mission. For more details, please see the Statement of Purpose and Duties for EAB Members, the EAB Candidate Application & Questionnaire, and the below Applicant Information Submission Instructions. All documentation from applicants must be received by close of business on Friday, October 2, 2015 in order to be considered for the position.

All applicants for the vacant Education Advisory Board (EAB) seat are required to:

  • Your 65-word presentation description contains a precise objective and a clear audience takeaway; and
  • You use proper grammar, capitalization, and punctuation.

NENA’s Next Generation 9-1-1 Industry Collaboration Event (ICE) series provides the opportunity for 9-1-1 equipment and service providers to come together to test products and services in an open, supportive, and collaborative environment. You are invited to participate in the upcoming  ICE 7, which will focus on the testing of smartphone applications for 9-1-1; usage scenarios for the Emergency Incident Data Document (EIDD); and the transfer of additional caller data beyond callback number, location information, and GIS/mapping.

NENA invites all interested vendors and entities that have a stake in improving 9-1-1 and emergency services access to participate in ICE 7. Application developers, CAD/RMS vendors, and the entire NG9-1-1 vendor community should consider participating in this event and in the activities of the ICE 7 planning committee, which will be convened in the near future.

If you would like to participate in ICE 7, please contact Delaine Arnold by 10/12/2015. The ICE team would like to hold its first kick-off meeting on 10/22/2015 at noon ET for an anticipated spring 2016 event.

OPS UPDATE
The National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA)has released a white paper to promote collaboration and coordination between 9-1-1 authorities and emergency management authorities. The paper is entitled "911 and Emergency Management: Best Practices for Coordination and Collaboration."

TECH UPDATE
The NG9-1-1 Call Processing Metrics Working Group is creating a NENA standard that specifies NG9-1-1 processing metrics. These metrics are traditionally considered to be defined time spans between pairs of processing events that can be used in reporting and analysis. Examples would be the time between two steps in call processing, or the time between a database query and the received response.

Skills needed include:
  • PSAP and dispatch operations management experience
  • Familiarity with i3 architecture
  • Experience designing Public Safety call handling technology
  • Experience writing technical standards

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (Bureau) announces the opening of its Public Safety Support Center (PSSC), a web-based, one-stop portal to enable Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) and other Public Safety entities to request support or information from the Bureau and to notify it of problems or issues impacting the provision of emergency services. The PSSC is available here.  

A principal goal of the Bureau is to ensure consistent and timely support to public safety stakeholders. The development of the PSSC is the latest step by the Bureau to fulfill this goal. The PSSC will handle notifications of service outages, complaints related to carrier provision of location information, and register issues, or submit inquiries regarding PSAP or Public Safety operations or FCC rules and regulations.

State and local 911 professionals, Federal agency representatives and other 911 stakeholders will participate in a "State of 911" webinar and question and answer session, presented by the National 911 Program, Tuesday, October 13th from 12-1 p.m. EST.

This webinar will feature discussions on availability of technical assistance (presented by Rear Admiral Ronald Hewitt, USCG (Ret.), Director DHS OEC and Ms. Serena Maxey Chief of DHS OEC’s Technical Assistance Branch) and New York State’s statewide addressing project (presented by Ms. Cheryl Benjamin from the New York State Office of Information Technology Services, Street and Address Maintenance Program).
