The public safety community is at an inflection point. On the one hand, the early hype about the wonders—and terrors—of Next Generation 9-1-1 is giving way to practical, real-world deployments of ESInets, Interim SMS text-to-9-1-1 systems, and components of the NG9-1-1 i3 architecture. At the same time, though, newer and newer technologies are making their way into emergency communications: Big Data, the Cloud, and the Internet of Things, for example.
During this fast-paced, informative NG9-1-1 Critical Issues Forum (October 8-9 | Orlando, FL), you will hear from leaders in the field and gain the insights you need to navigate through the challenges ahead. With so much focus being directed at the development of the ESINet and other functional elements of the NG9-1-1 environment, this presentation will aim to provide a practical perspective on data preparation prior to its use in an actual NG9-1-1 deployment. Getting GIS data ready for use in a NG 9-1-1 geospatial call routing environment will be emphasized but the retention/use of existing traditional data will also be highlighted as a critical concern. The role of NENA standards and guidelines currently under development will also be tied into this work. Examples of processes and techniques underway in many locations today will be highlighted.

NENA and the Federal Railroad Administration are working closely to develop new information, applications, and resources to assist both the railroad and 9-1-1 communities better deal with emergencies. Dispatcher Survey The Federal Railroad Administration is looking for call takers and dispatchers to complete this short (five-minute), confidential survey by September 17. Your organization’s participation in the survey will help the FRA identify both the strengths and weaknesses in training regarding railroad emergencies. Law Enforcement Officer Survey The Federal Railroad Administration asks that all Law Enforcement Officers complete this short (five-minute), confidential survey by September 19th. Your organization’s participation in the survey will help the FRA identify both the strengths and weaknesses in Law Enforcement training regarding railroad emergencies. The departure of an Education Advisory Board (EAB) member has created a vacancy on the committee. NENA is looking to fill the open seat with a NENA member in good standing who possess the desire and dedication to become part of the team charged with carrying out NENA’s educational mission. OPS UPDATE
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted Interim Guidance for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Systems and 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) for Management of Patients with Known or Suspected Ebola Virus Disease in the United States online at the CDC website.
Coordination among PSAPs, the EMS system, health care facilities and the public health system is important for a coordinated response to Ebola. Each 9-1-1 and EMS system should seek the involvement of an EMS medical director to provide appropriate medical oversight. The guidance provided in this document is based on current knowledge of Ebola. It is intended for 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points, EMS and medical first responders including firefighters and law enforcement personnel. The guidance is not intended to set forth mandatory requirements or establish national standards.
TECH UPDATE
The purpose of the Requirements for a National Forest Guide Information Document is to gather a set of requirements for a national, authoritative Forest Guide (FG) in order to allow an entity (NENA, FCC, DOT, etc.) to procure the technology and services required from this NG9-1-1 functional element. A Forest Guide is a special instance of a LoST server. It is part of the Location to Service Translation (LoST) protocol (RFC5222) query process and allows client functional elements to discover call routing information outside of its domain (typically their ESInet or state level ECRF/LVF).
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
Nationwide collection of statistics about 911 systems is key to ensuring the development of optimal 911 services and the implementation of Next Generation 911 (NG911). With a more complete picture of 911 services nationwide, States will have access to important data to help educate local legislators, make system modifications and demonstrate the value of 911 to local governments, first responders and the community.
The National 911 Program has announced the National 911 Profile Database is open and accepting 911 system data for 2013. In cooperation with the National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA), the Program encourages states to voluntarily share information about a number of data points, including the number of 911 calls received, 911 fees and progress toward implementing NG911. The data collection process is underway through mid-September and a data analysis report will be available by the end of the calendar year. Click here to continue reading...
