NENA:
Tell us a little bit about who you are, where you’re from, what you do, and your history with NENA....

Patricia Bligen Jones: Patricia Bligen Jones, born in Charleston, S.C., and raised on Edisto Island, S.C.. I began my career in public safety communications in 1999, beginning with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office as a frontline dispatcher and certified communications training officer. I have been married for nearly 23 years, and my husband and I have two children, Avery, 18, and Peyton, 12. I became a member of NENA in 2011, after becoming an ENP.

NENA: Why did you choose a career in public safety?

PBJ: I chose a career in public safety because I have a genuine desire to help people in need. When I began my career 15 years ago, I started as a frontline law dispatcher, became a trainer, then training supervisor, and now Terminal Agency Coordinator. It gives me great joy to assist people, no matter what circumstances or situations they are facing.

OPS UPDATE
The goal for the Maine TERT is to become fully trained, recognized by the NJTI, and be available as a deployable asset when a disaster strikes. All of the participants understand the need to have a team ready to assist when others are in need. We also hope to conduct, at a minimum, annual training to inject new members into the team. We have had many discussions at the state level about the process(s) by which we will keep the team active and deployable and looking to conduct a minimum of one (1) exercise per year to hone the skills of the team members, being mindful that we may not have a physical deployment for a period of time.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE
For more than two decades, public safety professionals have advocated for the ability to quickly and accurately locate consumers who call 9-1-1 from wireless devices. Last week’s FCC action is a major step forward in this effort.

NENA applauds FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, his fellow commissioners, and the FCC’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau for their successful leadership on this complex but critical issue.

Under the new rules, wireless carriers will be required, for the first time, to use the latest technology to identify the location of consumers who call 9-1-1, even when calls are placed indoors. With its emphasis on identifying a caller’s physical address, the new FCC policy will enable public safety professionals to serve the public with greater speed, accuracy, and efficiency than ever before.

On behalf of thousands of 9-1-1 professionals across the nation, NENA commends FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai for his leadership on the issue of reaching 9-1-1 emergency services via multi-line telephone systems (MLTS), such as those used in hotels and office buildings. Commissioner Pai held an event in Texas to discuss the progress that has been made on this issue since the tragic death of Kari Rene Hunt Dunn, who was killed nearly one year ago by her estranged husband while her daughter tried and failed to reach 9-1-1 from their hotel room in Marshall, Texas.

NENA is pleased by the progress that is being made on this issue, and we stand with Commissioner Pai in calling for further action. In this high-tech era, it is unfortunate that such a high percentage of MLTS still require users to dial an extra digit before 9-1-1 to reach an emergency professional.
