Volunteers Wanted

The NENA Institute Board (NIB) seeks to fill an At-Large seat on the NIB. The successful nominee will serve for one year beginning in June 2022. To apply, you must be a current ENP and a NENA member.

The NENA Institute Board has two objectives:

  • Support the activities of NENA and its members by raising and maintaining professional standards in the field of emergency number management; and
  • Define the Body of Knowledge which indicates broad competence in the implementation and administration of emergency telecommunications services and provides a mechanism by which individuals may demonstrate to the Institute that they have acquired this knowledge and are entitled to ENP certification.

At-Large delegates represent the NENA membership, help disseminate Institute and ENP program information, and are involved in the ENP Examination Review. They are expected to attend the NENA Annual Conference, a two-day Examination Review and NIB Annual Business Meeting each year, as well as monthly conference calls.

Applicants must have a firm knowledge of 9-1-1 technology, management and operations, with a good grasp of how 9-1-1 will change in the future.

Expressions of interest, along with a resume and/or bio, should be sent to Vicki Pickett, Nominating Committee Chair of the NENA Institute Board by Monday, March 28th for consideration.

NENA is seeking volunteers to enhance the existing NENA document related to information spoofing mitigation (NENA-INF-043, NENA Spoofing Mitigation Information Document ) to focus on two areas: (1) the application of non-IP call authentication mechanisms to callback calls; and (2) location spoofing mitigation.

The existing document addresses non-IP call authentication in the context of 9‑1‑1 calls but does not consider whether there are special considerations/impacts associated with applying such mechanisms to callback calls that may encounter IP-TDM interworking between the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) and the emergency caller. Input from the WG is needed to assess the applicability of industry-defined non-IP call authentication mechanisms to callback calls.

Spoofing Mitigation WG members have identified the need for a mechanism that will allow PSAPs to assess the legitimacy of the location information associated with a 9-1-1 call. The ability to recognize spoofed location information further improves support for the detection and mitigation of swatting attacks.  While the technical details associated with a location spoofing mitigation mechanism will be addressed outside of this WG, this WG will play a role in identifying the type of information that would be useful to PSAPs in assessing the legitimacy of the location information associated with a 9-1-1 call. In addition, once a location spoofing mitigation solution has been identified, the WG will assess the operational impacts of that solution, with consideration given to topics such as: the definition of new SOPs; PSAP training; and display considerations associated with new/additional information.

Volunteers with the following expertise would be helpful in producing this deliverable:

  • Technical understanding of non-IP call authentication mechanisms
  • Expertise in location determination technologies and conveyance protocols
  • Operational expertise associated with the development  of SOPs and location processing in the context of emergency call handling

The working group meets Mondays 1:00 - 2:00 ET. Click here to join.
