Plan now to join us in Louisville for #NENA2022!

The new president of NENA is a 23-year veteran of 9-1-1 operations in east Tennessee, with a passion for investing in people.

Jennifer White, ENP, is the 9-1-1 Director of the Loudon County (TN) Emergency Communications District. She and the rest of the 2021-2022 Board of Directors were sworn in on July 28 at the NENA 2021 Conference and Expo in Columbus, OH. White now leads the organization’s more than 17,000 members in advancing NENA’s mission to improve 9-1-1 through research, standards development, training, education, outreach, and advocacy.

In remarks to the conference, Ms. White emphasized the need for 9-1-1 professionals to invest in themselves and in the association. "Give something of yourself and see the improvement in your own life, in the lives of those around you, in our profession, and in our association," she said. White also underscored the importance of education and active engagement in the 9-1-1 community, stating that, "When you participate, you’re not only growing as a 9-1-1 professional, but also ensuring that the public will get the best help possible when they need us." She continued, "Find your voice and be heard! We all have something to share that can benefit our peers."

i3v3 Accelerates the Drive Toward 21st-Century 9-1-1 Services

On July 12, NENA released a landmark new version of its Next Generation 9-1-1 standard, a move that will accelerate the transition to smarter, faster, and more resilient emergency response. Version 3 of NENA's i3 Standard for Next Generation 9-1-1 includes key updates to NG9-1-1 infrastructure, paving the way for interoperability on a national and international scale.

"This is a landmark moment in the evolution of NG9-1-1," said Gary Bell, ENP, President of NENA. "The public-safety community and the tech industry now have the most up-to-date, comprehensive, consensus-driven, open standard for NG9-1-1. This will no doubt hasten and strengthen our push to see NG9-1-1 systems, services, and products deployed coast to coast."

The new version will serve as the foundation of a 21st Century, broadband-based 9-1-1 ecosystem. Version 3 changes include:

  • New REST/JSON architecture, following modern best practices for interface design;
  • Cybersecurity improvements;
  • Major updates to call bridging;
  • Discrepancy Reports;
  • Outgoing Call Interface Function;
  • Blind transfer support;
  • Updates to handle novel call types (including non-interactive calls and Advanced Automatic Crash Notifications); and
  • Harmonization with European specifications.

Volunteers Wanted

NENA is seeking volunteers to re-convene the Interface Specifications Development Workgroup. The workgroup will write a policy for contributing and managing code repositories for various NENA deliverables. The workgroup will write two versions of an administrative policy that:

Deliverable 1

  • Sets rules overall for NENA repositories
  • Sets a policy for creating a new repository
  • Sets a policy for updating the repository (e.g., NENA Document Required, Expert Review, Specification Required, First Come First Serve, etc)
  • Sets a policy for managing a repository
  • Sets a policy maintaining API definitions and schemas in a repository
Deliverable 2
  • Sets rules for maintaining registries in a repository
  • Sets rules for maintaining a NENA master glossary in a repository
  • Sets guidelines for using code repositories for document version control
  • Sets technical rules for maintaining online NENA Master Glossary entries

It is expected that this work will incorporate significant portions of IETF RFC 8874. This workgroup will pilot document version control using a code repository and will write initial drafts of documents in markdown. The workgroup will meet infrequently, such as monthly or quarterly. In lieu of attending frequent (e.g., weekly) meetings, participation in group mailing lists is REQUIRED as a condition of membership in this workgroup.
