NENA recently announced that it has cancelled its upcoming in-person events – the NG9-1-1 Standards & Best Practices Conference (originally planned for January ’21) and 9-1-1 Goes to Washington (originally planned for February ’21) – due to the ongoing public-health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. NENA is exploring the possibility of hosting a virtual 9-1-1 Goes to Washington in February of 2021 and looks forward to resuming the in-person Standards & Best Practices Conference in January of 2022.

From now through December 4, NENA is accepting session proposals for the NENA 2021 Conference & Expo taking place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH from June 26 - July 1.

Presenting a session at NENA 2021 is an excellent opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with an audience of 9-1-1 professionals eager to gain and share information. It is also your chance to give back to the profession and help inspire, inform, and educate attendees on a variety of important issues.

On October 27, officials from NENA and APCO International adopted a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide the joint standards development work undertaken by the two organizations when renewing a joint standard. One such example is the Standard for Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (TERT) Deployment, which is up for its next five-year review in 2020. Separately, the two organizations conduct their standards work utilizing somewhat different procedures; the MoU serves as a bridge across these small differences in process.

"Developing standards is an essential activity for both NENA and APCO, and our memberships benefit when the two organizations can work together. NENA is pleased to adopt this MoU so that mutually-beneficial joint standards work can move forward," said NENA President, Gary Bell, ENP.

The Nationwide Cybersecurity Review (NCSR) is a no-cost, anonymous, annual self-assessment designed to measure gaps and capabilities of state, local, tribal, and territorial governments’ cybersecurity programs. It is based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework (NIST CSF), and is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center® (MS-ISAC®). This assessment is a strategic risk management level assessment without in-depth technical questions, making it feasible for all information security professionals to complete.

The NENA Standard for the Implementation of the Wireless Emergency Service Protocol E2 provides explicit protocols and parameters for interoperable operation of the E2 interface over TCP/IP. This interface is between the Mobile Positioning Center (MPC)/ Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC) and the Emergency Services Message Entity (ESME) as defined in ANSI/J-STD-036-C-2-2017 (e.g., an Automatic Location Identification [ALI] system or a Legacy Network Gateway [LNG]). This standard also specifies implementation details not specified in ANSI/J-STD-036-C-2-2017 down to explicit elements so that there can be no confusion regarding how parameters are to be implemented.

The NENA Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) United States Civic Location Data Exchange Format (CLDXF) Standard provides a definitive set of core civic location data elements that support emergency response and supports the exchange of United States civic location information related to 9-1-1 calls, both within the US and internationally, by defining the detailed data elements needed for location data exchange.

The associated reference document, Moving Data between Datasets Compliant with FGDC Address and NENA CLDXF Standards, presents CLDXF in relation to FGDC by stating the equivalencies between FGDC and CLDXF elements and noting any discrepancies in definition or construction.
