Washington Briefing
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is seeking feedback on proposed updates to the National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP)—the Nation’s strategic plan to improve emergency communications. Informed by last year’s SAFECOM Nationwide Survey, the NECP provides guidance to those that plan for, coordinate, invest in, and use communications to support response and recovery operations. This includes traditional emergency responder disciplines (e.g., law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, dispatch) and other entities that share information during emergencies, such as medical facilities, utilities, nongovernmental organizations, as well as the media and private citizens.

To prepare stakeholders for a rapidly evolving emergency communications landscape, CISA is leading a national effort to update the NECP (last published in 2014). Proposed updates reflect the expanding ecosystem of people, technologies, and functions involved in supporting emergency communications to aid public safety entities with addressing today’s challenges while also planning for future advancements.

To provide comments on the updated NECP, complete the feedback form on the DHS website and submit it to OECNECP@hq.dhs.gov  by March 22, 2019.
Volunteers Wanted

The NENA Institute Board (NIB) is seeking to fill an At-Large seat on the NIB. The successful nominee will serve for two years beginning in June 2019. To apply, you must be a current ENP and a NENA member.

The NENA Institute Board has two objectives:

  • Support the activities of NENA and its members by raising and maintaining professional standards in the field of emergency number management.
  • Define the Body of Knowledge which indicates broad competence in the implementation and administration of emergency telecommunications services and provides a mechanism by which individuals may demonstrate to the Institute that they have acquired this knowledge and are entitled to ENP certification.
At-Large delegates represent the NENA membership, help disseminate Institute and ENP program information, and are involved in the ENP examination review. They are expected to attend the NENA Annual Conference, a two-day examination review, and NIB Annual Business Meeting each year, as well as monthly conference calls.

Applicants must have a firm knowledge of 9-1-1 technology, management and operations, with a good grasp of how 9-1-1 will change in the future.

Expressions of interest, along with a resume and/or bio, should be sent to Jennifer (Estes) Lanter, ENP of the NENA Institute Board by Friday, March 8 for consideration by the Nominating Committee.
