Telecommunicators have long been promised improved caller location and a variety of additional data — but how can it actually be received in the PSAP? This webinar gives 9-1-1 professionals a practical overview of how to access supplemental data sources like smartphone device location and additional data from a variety of apps and IoT devices, all for free through the NENA i3-compliant NG9-1-1 clearinghouse. Presenters will discuss ways of accessing faster and more comprehensive data securely from the clearinghouse via existing PSAP software using NG9-1-1 mechanisms - and at no cost to public safety. RapidSOS staff will be joined by Jim Lake, PSAP Director with Charleston County 9-1-1, who will share his perspective on the ongoing challenges of location accuracy and the benefits of improved information flowing in to 9-1-1 centers.

Speakers: Reinhard Ekl - RapidSOS | Tracy Eldridge - RapidSOS | Jim Lake - Charleston County (SC) Consolidated 9-1-1 Center

Document Announcements

NENA has released a Request For Information regarding plans for an NG9-1-1 Conformance Testing service. NENA intends to gather information about vendor capabilities, approach, and experience relevant to testing the conforming behavior of NG9-1-1 systems and services relative to NENA and other applicable industry standards.

This RFI is intended to elicit responses from interested parties, including customers, vendors, and testing organizations, on:

  • What it would take, should it decide to move forward, to put in place an additional, expanded and formal process of conformance testing to complement the ICE process;
  • The basic structure, format, and organization of a conformance testing program; and
  • How a conformance testing program would provide validation to all stakeholders that any solution advertised as "NENA-standards-compliant" is indeed "NENA-standards-compliant."

The RFI is an information gathering tool to aid NENA in the process of deciding whether or not to develop and support an industry standard method for Standards Conformance Testing (SCT) using, at a minimum, the NENA developed NG9-1-1 series of standards.

NENA will make a decision on whether or not to release an RFP based in part on the information received as a result of this RFI. Questions can be directed to NENA's Technical Director Roger Hixson.

Responses are due by June 29.

Today, NENA announced the publication of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for its planned Enhanced PSAP Registry and Census (EPRC), a modernization and expansion of the widely-used NENA PSAP Registry. Sponsored by Uber, the EPRC will provide not only a traditional reference database for manual routing, but also enhanced geographic search capability and PSAP polygon boundaries, expanded data on PSAP capabilities and characteristics, and an easy-to-use online interface. NENA seeks respondents with strong background in database management, Geographic Information System (GIS), and PSAP operations.

View the RFP for more information and proposal submission instructions.

Responses are due by June 19.

Having adjudicated all comments, the subject documents are now considered "stable." Per NENA IPR, Section 4.5 a "Stable Form Notice" is being issued for each and can be seen by clicking here.
Dates to Remember

The deadline to sign up for the July 14-28 ENP examination window is June 15. The next examination period is October 6-20 , with an application deadline of September 7. If you plan to sit for the examination either in July or October, please consider attending the ENP Boot Camp on Thursday, June 21 at NENA 2018. You will find the workshop very helpful as you prepare for the exam.

To help you further prepare for the examination, you should also consider participating in one of several study groups being offered prior to the October exam. The FL NENA Education Committee will be offering a study group starting on July 17 and running through August 28. Sessions will be on Tuesdays at 2PM Eastern. Email mwhitby@pinellascounty.org to join this study group or to get more information.

Volunteers Wanted

The move of 9-1-1 into a full NG9-1-1 environment will entail many operational impacts. Some obvious, others less so.  In order to plan more effectively for the rapidly arriving NG reality, including the associated decisions, preparation, planning, and communication which will be essential for NG 9-1-1 success, a new NENA NG9-1-1 Impacts on the PSAP Workgroup is being created.

This workgroup will build on the lessons and experiences of early adopters, insight into future technologies and systems, and the knowledge and vision of workgroup members to develop a guidance document to support PSAPs in their management of the way operations will evolve in the coming years as we work to a full and complete NG9-1-1 roll-out. This effort will provide a foundational tool for PSAP managers, stakeholders, field responders, and 9-1-1 personnel as they navigate the possibilities and realities of our shared 9-1-1 future.

Any member of these groups, early adopters with 9-1-1 experience, vendors in the NG9-1-1 space, and other interested parties are encouraged to sign up for this workgroup. Calls will be held on Tuesdays at 2PM Eastern.

The NENA PRR workgroup is reforming to refresh and update the three documents covering this topic. The group will assess changes in all NENA standards since the initial release of the documents and make required changes. The group will also evaluate the possibility of collapsing the three documents into two or perhaps a single document going forward.

Participation is encouraged from all stakeholder groups, but expertise is needed from 9-1-1 authorities and vendors that have implemented NG9-1-1 in general, and ESRP/PRR in particular. and have some operational experience with this functionality.

The workgroup will have a conference call every Friday at 3:00PM Eastern beginning on June 29. It is anticipated that given the narrow scope of work, the workgroup could fulfill its charter by the fall. Click here to join.
